Accusations of musician harassment against Daniel Barenboim have provoked a change of tone in the Berlin press.

The Taggespiegel urges the Senate ‘to put a clear end to the glittering era, to protect the workaholic Barenboim from himself’ by reducing his title and his workload.

The Tageszeitung suggests that that year-round ‘radiation of the Sun King’ should be tempered by a broader artistic process.

The intendant of the Staatsoper, Matthias Schulz, says he is engaged in widespread consultations.

The highly rated Andrew Manze has all but ruled himself our for the succession in Liverpool by renewing until 2023 at the radio orchestra in Hannover.

There is not one modern piece in the schedule and this is a hell of a lot of music to cover in 45 minutes. As a point of etymology, it appears that the traditional English ‘leader’ has been supplanted by the German/American term ‘concertmaster’.

We hear that about half Los Angeles Philharmonic musicians will perform with Gustavo Dudamel during the In Memoriam segment of the Oscars Show tonight.

There is no guarantee they will be seen on TV.

Jeannette Sorrell, who won a Grammy this month with Apollo’s Fire, has not found it easy to break into the profession.

After studying harpsichord with Gustav Leonhardt in Amsterdam she returned to the US looking to start a career. The Cleveland Orchestra suggested she should apply to be its Assistant Conductor.

Summoned to interview, the music director Christoph von Dohnanyi told her not to bother: Cleveland audiences would never tolerate a female conductor.

The man who did help was the orchestra’s British administrator, Roger Wright. He encouraged her to start Apollo’s Fire, the Cleveland Baroque Orchestra.
