The veteran conductor, who underwent cancer treatment for  much of last year, has cancelled his limelight appearance at the Vienna Philharmonic Ball this week.

He has also called off his farewell US tour with the Israel Philharmonic.

Daniel Harding will replace him in Vienna, Yoel Levi on tour.

We wish Zubin better.

I wholeheartedly agree with your kind response, Spencer, and I am in fervent prayer for Maestro Mehta’s return to health. He is a magnificent Mahler interpreter, as was the late Claudio Abbado, Maestro Mehta’s dear friend and colleague. You are enormously admired, applauded, beloved and revered, Maestro Mehta, and so many of us stand with a bowed head, wishing you only the very best!

  • M2N2K says:

It is not surprising that at his age, after being weakened first by cancer itself and then by subsequent treatments of it, the recovery after a major hip surgery Zubin Mehta underwent last month is unfortunately a very slow and long process. Therefore flying all over the world is not just extremely difficult but virtually impossible for him these days. He has no choice but to decrease his conducting and other activities quite drastically now. We can only hope that the Maestro does not suffer any more serious setbacks and keeps getting better throughout the rest of this year.

  • Luisa Einav says:

My utmost wishes to Maestro Zubin Mehta, a great conductor and a great man, praying for his recovery.

  • Klara says:

His piani and mezzoforti are more refined, clear and more beautifull then big gesticulation and fortissimi of other conductors.
