Charles Ives realiser dies at 80
mainThe composer Larry Austin who made the most usable completion of Ives’s Universe Symphony has died.
He was a computer music specialist, founder of the periodical Source: Music of the Avant Garde and a much respected composer whose work was commissioned by Leonard Bernstein for the New York Philharmonic.
He taught at the University of North Texas.
Rest in peace.
I have a personal interest in the area of intersection between Computational Science and Music, so I did some fast googling and through Larry Austin (R.I.P) I got to the International Computer Music Association, of which he was once president. It provides some interesting resources and also past issues of its ARRAY newsletter. I chose an issue and a “paper” at random and was quite amazed at what I found.
A communication titled “Not All Ideas Are The Same: Challenging dominant discourses and re-imagining computer music research”.
It turns out to be a manifesto of Leftist Feminist Identity Politics…

R.I.P. Larry Austin – a great musician and human being.
Larry Austin was born in Duncan, OK on October 12, 1930, and died at age 88 on December 30, 2018. He was our star trumet player in my high school band in Vernon TX. He studied at what was then North Texas State Teachers College in Denton TX, now part of the UT system.
Everyone seemed in awe of him even then, and i did not know him well but sometimes followed his later career at Mills College, where he studied with Darius Milhaud, and at UC-Berkeley and UC-Davis, where he conducted the concert band.
