The Lucerne Festival Orchestra has added a last-minute fourth concert to this summer’s programme. It will be conducted not by music director Riccardo Chailly but by the wing-spreading Met chief, Yannick Nézet-Séguin.

We hear that Chailly is happy with this arrangement.

For Yannick, it’s a chance to plant his size-sixes in one of the most important musical venues – important, not just because it has the best modern concert hall but because it is the #1 favourite watering-hole of fat-cat classical donors. If the Met is to survive, Yannick needs to make nice to these peeps.

This is not an added concert, but a change in the program- Chailly was the original conductor and the program was Tchaikovsky 4th, Romeo & Juliet overture, and Stravinsky violin concerto with Kavakos.
Now the program under Yannick is Beethoven violin concerto and Shostakovich 4.

“If the Met is to survive, Yannick needs to make nice to these peeps.” Not at all, he needs to make nice to affluent New Yorkers, as every Met conductor has to as part of the job. Same for Jaap. Conductors who are not up for this should conduct orchestras outside the US (probably for a lower level of personal compensation). Yannick is, however, pretty good at it based on what has gone on in Philadelphia. The Met will survive without money from Switzerland or anywhere else. “If you can make it there, you’ll make it anywhere.” Noo Yawk stands on it’s own two feet.

    Long overdue. Way to go!

  • Petros Linardos says:

Poor Yannick, all that work he has to do at Lucerne to support the MET… Are we kidding? Would any conductor in their right mind turn down the Lucerne Festival Orchestra’s invitation?
