Paris Opera musicians demand to name their next maestro
mainMusicians at the Orchestre de l’Opéra de Paris have written to the Minister of Culture saying that while he has the right to appoint a successor to Stéphane Lissner as general director, they want to be part of the process of choosing the next music director, successor to Philippe Jordan.
Until recently, the job has been in the gift of the general director and the government.
I’m sure they’ll get what they want if they burn a few tyres on the Champs Elysées.

Poor Macron, the very embodiment of the checked-out, living-in-a-bubble EU bureaucrat. These folk (and this includes Angela Merkel) do not seem to understand that their very policies are helping drive Europe into the abyss.The Democratic party in the U.S.A. is in the same boat. And water keeps seeping in. And no, I am no supporter of the reactive/alternative far-right leadership gaining strength on both sides of the pond. This is the abyss I write about.
The usual nonsense of narrow-minded abyss staring. The difficulties European politicians (both of the countries and of the EU) are attempting to solve are the results of globalization, and a one-sided economic policy in the West since the eighties. They cannot be solved in a short period because the entire social fabric has to be reformed, especially now under the pressures of climate change. That is what Macron is trying, and where he is going too fast and forgets to take into account the yellow garments of the provinces (who is exploring those lands anyway?), he is being corrected, that’s all.
PS The current social situation in Europe is inherited from many former governments and the current politicians are not responsible for it, they have to solve it and have to find solutions for problems which were created decennia ago.

Politics should get out of running opera and theater altogether. It certainly can remain a player among other players (literally: performers) in pursuing ways (including financial) to advance and make accessible to as many as possible culture and cultural events – but culture, not the individual politician, needs to come first. Sadly, politicians stage their own tasteless horror shows which are at times utterly repulsive to watch (such as the one running at Westminster at the moment). Let the Paris musicians have a, and moreover THE, say in who is to be the next music director. They are the ones who make opera happen.
As far as the relationship between culture and politicians is concerned, the french have the best possible president. Unfortunately the gilets jaunes don’t play an instrument or go to concerts.
If the rumours about Lorenzo Viotti being appointed are confirmed, I really understand that the musicians are very very much concerned.
