His 1975 DG Vienna Philharmonic recording of Beethoven’s 5th is still the gold standard for me. That transition from the 3rd movement to the triumphant 4th is one of the most thrilling moments in all of music.
Great conductor but imo neither performance comes close to the recordings he made of each piece with the VPO. Both the Brahms and Beethoven recordings manage to achieve a level of vitality which I find lacking in these live performances.
Shame he had such a tiny repertoire though !

THIS WAS VERY GOOD AND INSPIRED HOWEVER NOT TWO OF THE GREATEST. OBVIOUSLY NORMAN LIKED THIS. MR KLEIBER REPETOIRE WAS VERY LIMITED AND I THINK HE IS OVER RATED. GOOD NOT SPECTACULAR.
I agree. I wonder if some other conductors could have produced a couple of legendary recordings if they limited themselves to such a small repertoire?
Interesting that the Beethoven is performed with the Stokowski orchestral layout, the Brahms with divided strings. The Beethoven would have been better with the traditional layout (and I agree with those who think the DG recording better).
Add his performance of Beethovens 5th and you have 3 of the greatest interpretations ever put on disc.
This worshipping of dead conductors is indeed bizarre.
Why would one want to celebrate a Kleiber Christmas?he’s dead…shouldn’t one celebrate with the living.
No wonder the art is drying up,too many of the audience
are at the cemetery instead of the concert hall.
To make a recording or a video a standard of comparison is even more bizarre.
