The Swedish composer Ludwig Göransson has been picked to compose The Mandalorian, the next in the Star Wars series.

He says: ‘Words fail to express how surreal and humbling it feels to be invited into the Star Wars universe. I am deeply grateful to Jon Favreau and Disney for this opportunity and to John Williams for raising the bar so high with his iconic, intrepid scores — they will never be matched. In these next months, I hope to honour the tradition of Star Wars’ musical landscape while propelling The Mandalorian into new and uncharted territory. And I will try to remember that there is no try.’

Not since ABBA has a Swedish musician grabbed so big a chunk of mass culture.

No pressure following John Willians, no not at all

  • Pianofortissimo says:

    Who cares?

  • Matk says:

Misleading. The title makes it sound like williams was dropped. He quit. Im sick to death of sensatioal headlines

    • Harrumph says:

He didn’t quit. This is a TV series and has nothing to do with the Star Wars canon movies which Williams will continue to score as long as he’s alive and able.

      • Horris says:

Williams is sadly stopping his work on Star Wars, after Episode 9. I think we are in for a bad ride with the music for Star Wars, post Williams. I will might have to stop watching these films, to be honest. This new guy is OK, but his caliber is way below Williams’.

    • Noah says:

Yea like Stan Lee from marvel

  • Your Nemesis says:

Quite a moronic title, to say the least.

1)John Williams would NOT score a Star Wars TV series

2)John Williams was not replaced, he has decided to score his last Star Wars film with episode 9

    and

3)This new guy is a terrible choice. There are FAR better composers out there to score this series.

    • MacroV says:

I’m usually quick to criticize Norman’s headlines, but this one seems reasonable. Maybe he should have used the verb “to succeed” instead of “replaces.” But otherwise: he was chosen to take over from John Williams in scoring the Star Wars films.

And it doesn’t say anything about a tv series, so not sure where that came from.

  • mr oakmountain says:

Neither is this the Star Wars SERIES (it is a TV spin-off), nor was Williams REPLACED (he was never considered).

Please, Mr L, we will still read your blog, and do it with less frustration, if you do your headlines in a less sensationalist way.

  • Phillip Ayling says:

The headline is really misleading clickbait.

This is a TV show…and John Williams hasn’t been scoring TV for almost a half century. Nor is there any credible information that John Williams was ever signed to score this program… and then either quit or was replaced.

More on point, John Williams already didn’t score the prior theatrical Motion Pictures; SOLO: A Star Wars Story; or ROGUE ONE: A Star Wars Story. Those were scored by John Powell and Michael Giacchino respectively.

    • Harrumph says:

John Williams is indeed still scoring the Star Wars *canon* films. He scored “Force Awakens” (2015), “Last Jedi” (2017), and will be scoring Episode IX (now in production).

  • Rob says:

    It’s always “humbling” isn’t it.
