Evelyn Glennie’s in the thick of it all this morning.

A BBC journalist showed the deaf percussion player TV footage of Jeremy Corbyn muttering something unpleasant at the prime minister:

“I just showed Evelyn Glennie, the famous percussionist, the footage of Jeremy Corbyn in the Commons. She’s deaf and can lip read.

“She wasn’t aware of the story and her interpretation of what he said was “stupid woman”.

“She says she’s very certain.”

Take a look.

  • Malcolm James says:

Well, a number of other hearing-impaired people reckon he said ‘people’, so we can debate this all day long and not get anywhere.

  • Will Duffay says:

Christ, this is a non-story. The Tory government is hell-bent on destroying the United Kingdom either through a really bad Brexit deal or through no-deal, and suddenly all the Tory press – including the BBC – want to talk about is whether Corbyn called the 2nd-worst Prime Minister in the UK’s history a ‘stupid woman’.

  • Jean Hopman says:

so what? she IS a stupid woman and her behaviour which prompted the reaction was pathetic. the comment was well earned.

  • Barry Darkins says:

Corbynistas will say that Corbyn said “stupid people” and others will say he said “stupid woman”. I’ve watched the footage several times and to me it’s clear he says “stupid woman”. The point here is that Corbyn has been caught out and then told a bare faced lie in the commons. He has form (traingate, wreathgate) and lots of people will be wondering this morning whether they can believe a single word he says I future. I can’t understand why he didn’t just hold his hands up and apologise then it would have been over. Instead of that he’s just made a complete arse of himself.

  • Dan Maw says:

I’m fairly certain he said “Why is she playing pantomime instead of discussing the homelessness crisis and her awful brexit deal!” As ‘Will Duffay’ says, it is a non-story to talk about whether Corbyn called the 2nd worst PM in history a ‘Stupid Woman’.

    • V.Lind says:

Not the story. The story is about the Leader of the Opposition lying to Parliament –the most unprovabe offence in the world.

  • Rogerio says:

    Read my lips;
    s-t-u-p-i-d b-r-e-x-i-t

  • Cynical Bystander says:

I am in no doubt that he said stupid woman but given the magnitude of incompetance surrounding politics in the UK at the moment, so what? There are words that I could use to describe many males, females and others who designate themselves by multitudinous non binary identities and few of them would be complementary or parliamentary. Good job they, and more importantly we, are getting a break from their juvenile behaviour. The disturbing thing is that yesterday’s spat does nothing to resolve the current predicament the country finds itself in but everything to do with the fact that the bulk of our politicians are overwhelmingly prats, not fit to be called ‘honourable’, in fact the exact opposite.

  • anon says:

She is clearly both, so why is putting the two together sexist?

Trump was called a “fucking moron” by his Secretary of State, and Trump returned the favor by calling him “dumb as a rock”.

Would Teresa May’s pseudo supporters have preferred either of these insults to the utterly benign “stupid woman”?

BTW, lip reading is not a science. Calling in a deaf percussionist hardly resolves the issue.

    • V.Lind says:

The first ISSUE is that he mouthed or said it in the Chamber, which is against House rules. I watched it live and saw it, and watched tape when it turned into such an issue and am sure of it. The same rules that made him wrong protected him when he lied about it — it is also against House rules to decline to take the word of a member.

I once saw Jacob Rees-Mogg on HIGNFY, where Corbyn had said something unpopular — I think regarding nuclear deterrents and his preparedness (not) to press the button. JR-M entirely disagreed with him, but said he admired Corbyn for being a man of sufficient principle to take such a courageous position in the face of such widespread opposition to it, including from his own party. I was mentally agreeing with him, when Ian Hislop put in that Corbyn had reversed, or at least retracted, his stand the next day.

And so he has on so many issues. His position changes as often as Trump’s. But, more alarmingly, he seems to have Trump’s capacity for “alternate truth.” It is a pity he is so fireproof as leader, as his party is unelectable with him leading it. No matter what one’s politics, it is essential in our democracies to have a healthy opposition. And preferable an honest one.

Not since Prime Minister Trudeau was accused in Parliament of hurling “FU” at an opposition member, and claimed he had said “Fuddle Duddle” (hardly a Trudeauvian construction) have I seen such blatant dishonesty in a politician within the Chamber if which he is a member. Of course what he uttered is not as important as Brexit or other issues of the day. But his lie about it is.

      • Saxon Broken says:

We have two unelectable parties: the Tories and Labour. Unfortunately, one of them has to form the government.

  • Allen says:

I find it quite amusing to see the Left’s censorious attitude thrown back at it.

  • Pianofortissimo says:

Maybe the negative reactions would not be so strong if Mr Corbyn had said “stupid cis-gendered female” or “stupid heteronormative”. However, to his benefit, we have to recognize that he could have expressed himself much worse…

  • Chris. says:

I couldn’t care less if he did or didn’t but I’m happy to accept his word and that of a number of lip-readers who confirm he said people. Theresa May is a stupid woman and the Tories are stupid people. This is factual. A pathetic attempt by the Tories to distract from the Brexshit fiasco of their making.

  • Edgar says:

Paraphrasing Neil Postman: England amuses itself to death.

    We regret it not.

  • Paul Brownsey says:

Did she “call it out”? She merely gave her (expert) reading of what he said.

  • Owd Potter says:

So Mr Corbyn is stating the bloody obvious. Just another distraction from the msm.

  • Andrew says:

Well I have just looked at the clip at 1/4 speed, which you can do on You Tube and it is clear that he didn’t say the word “Woman” at all… Try it and see for yourself…. What is happening here is the same phenomenon as what happens when you watch a cartoon character, whose lips are not in sync with the sound but appears to be, because the brain accepts it to be, so if you are expecting “Stupid Woman” then that is what you will see… but watch him at 1/4 speed and you will see that he does not mouth the word woman at all….
