The former Glyndebourne dramaturg is heading for the same post at Santa Fe Opera.
She was latterly on the Hadrian team in Toronto.
What exactly does a dramaturg do? We never used to have them.
In her own words!
The term is quite clear in itself. The word is a shortened job description from the theatre world: drama-turg. The task of the dramaturg is to inject life in the production by making the drama more turgid, so that the emotional component comes across better. In opera, the emotions have to be dramaturged because they have to cross the abyss of the orchestra pit and if everything goes according to plan, the pit adds its own turgidness to the drama.
