Not many people remember that Richard Wagner learned all he knew about music in his first kapellmeister job at the opera house in Riga, 1837-39, right?

So the Latvian government is about to spend 20 big ones on renovating its Wagner concerthall, it announced today.

(Must be an EU grant, right?)

Apparently this building was the Riga Opera House in the years that Wagner was GMD. The link below says that the building has been unusable for the last decade.

Really? Did the learning stop after two years?

Can’t Latvia have SOMETHING nice?? Name one great thing Latvia has? It has the “Widest Waterfall”. Not even the highest waterfall, but the widest. Let them have a Wagner concert hall and be grateful that Wagner even went there for two years. Even though he borrowed tons of money while he was there and left all his debtors in the dust! No one ever accused him of being a super awesome guy….

Name on great thing Latvia has? Well, there is no shortage of greatly respected Latvian classical musicians, such as Jansons, Kremer, Maiski, Garanča.
