Ken-David Masur, 41, much-loved son of Kurt, has been named music director of the Milwaukee Symphony.

Milwaukee has been looking for a leader since Edo De Waart stepped down 15 months ago. Ken-David came through the auditions with overwhelming support from the musicians. He was the unanimous choice of the search committee, whose chairman said: ‘Ken-David is a once-in-a-generation musician, conductor and innovator who boasts an impressive resume of accomplishments, yet is friendly and approachable.’

A late starter, he is associate conductor of the Boston Symphony, married to the pianist Melinda Lee Masur, and father of three children. The couple are founders of New York’s Chelsea Music Festival.

More here.

Kurt would be so proud.

Congratulations! This is an excellent choice!

  • Kyle Wiedmeyer says:

If Maestro Masur’s performance of the second suite from Daphnis et Chloe with the MSO (in link) is a glimpse of things to come, then the orchestra is in good hands.

Terrific. I heard him conduct a program in Boston which included a very beautiful Scheherezade (Rimsky) – he coaxed lovely sounds from the strings but also let the wind soloists play solos in a very varied way, making the piece more interesting than I might have expected, having heard it a gazillion times. Very enjoyable.

  • Congratulations, Ken-David. You are terrific, and the orchestra is magnificent. Blessed marriage in music!

  • Ruben Greenberg says:

Milwaukee has a good orchestra and this will be an excellent match. Culture in the US Midwest tends to be underrated. Its cultural life is livelier than one usually thinks it is.

  • Jack says:

Brilliant pick! MSO, you made a great choice.

  • Gail Baker says:

    What great news!!

  • Ben says:

Seriously long overdue for an excellent conductor of his caliber. Congrats.
