The annual scuffle for year-end talent has closed with another victory for Dresden Staatskapelle over the Berlin Philharmonic.

The Staatskapelle Dresden and ZDF will be doing Fledermaus on December 29 and 30 with Jonas Kaufmann singing Eisenstein for the first time, Elisabeth Kulman as Prinz Orlofsky, Andreas Schager as Alfred and Rachel Willis-Sørensen as Rosalinde. Expent huge TV ratings.

Franz Welser-Möst conducts.

The Berlin Phil New Years Eve concert will be led by Daniel Barenboim, and has been on the schedule for some time. Check it out here:

So just when did this “annual scuffle” occur?

And ratings competition? The Berlin New Years Concert has been carried on the Digital Concert Hall for the past several years, so they’re not really in competition with Dresden.

  • Pedro says:

Pity Thielemann will be in Vienna conducting the New Year concerts at the same time. Welser-Möst is not for me.

  • anon says:

Natürlich, the Berlin Philharmonic is not a German orchestra.

Hasn’t been since Furtwängler. Alright, ever since Karajan.

  • anon says:

What a photo, Kaufmann’s pants zipper is at half-mast. Any singer’s nightmare.

  • Andrew Powell says:

RWS sang well in Les vêpres siciliennes last week. Hopefully she will find the razor wit needed for Rosalinde.

  • Tamino says:

There was never a competition over Kaufmann between those two parties for these concerts. So nobody could possibly lose or win over this anyway. The headline is pointless.

  • Emil says:

Do we have any evidence whatsoever that Berlin actually pursued Kaufmann for this concert?

  • Anonymous says:

First Eisenstein, eh? Expect a Luna before too long…

  • Rob says:

I don’t rate this singer at all. Little heft.

    • Helen Dutton says:

Are you mad. It is not all about heft anyway. Have you heard him live? If you had I believe you would be very impressed by him. His voice is unique and completely overwhelming.
