Do you follow her baton, her little hand, or her pony tail?

  • Barbara says:

    Kia kaha, Gemma

  • Musician34 says:

Worked with her a few times. Not good! Immature, no clue how to rehearse. Embarrassing that the Phil would hire her

    • Marg says:

One can only conclude then that an awful lot of good orchestras (at least a dozen) in the Northern Hemisphere have been taken in by her, despite her “immaturity and cluelessness” when planning their 2018-19 season guest conductors.

      • Bruce says:

As we* all know: when a man does well, it’s only because he deserves it; when a woman does well, it’s only because she’s a woman.

        • HSY says:

Also, as we all know, when a man is terrible at conducting, it’s because he is a terrible conductor; when a woman is terrible at conducting, it’s because women are terrible conductors.

          • M2N2K says:

Why all this sarcasm? The comment by “MUSICIAN34” simply expresses his/her opinion about this one particular conductor without making any generalizations at all, so your responses look like nothing but misplaced projections and/or straw man arguments.

          • HSY says:

            > Why all this sarcasm?

I have no idea how good or bad this conductor is. But NY Phil has hired plenty of mediocre or terrible conductors in the past for its concert series. (She is hired in this instance to do a Young People’s Concert.) Therefore even if she is indeed immature, I don’t see how it is particularly embarrassing for NY Phil as Musician34 claims, since there are plenty of precedents already. Hence the sarcasm.

    • Saxon Broken says:

Most young conductors still have much to learn about how to effectively rehearse an orchestra. And get better at it over time. And some rehearsals go better than others. Young conductors in their twenties are hired for their potential as much as their achievements.

  • Jonathan Dunsby says:

Well, upcoming concerts show her playing with Hilary Hahn (Bach, Mendelssohn concertos) and Michael Barenboim (Glazunov). Both great players
