Andris Nelsons: What it means to be Latvian
mainThe Boston music director has commissioned a new piece for his 40th birthday next month.
It’s by the Latvian composer Andris Dzenītis, marking the 100th anniversary of Latvian independence and, the composer says, it is ‘the musical encoding of my personal understanding of what it means to be Latvian.’
Any idea what it’s like, musically speaking, to be Lithuanian?
That’s right; Nelsons is still that young!!! What a wonderful future still ahead for this talented man.
How much does Nelsons conduct in Latvia these days?
He is there at present with the Gewandhaus on tour and the last of three concerts in Latvia, is tomorrow night.
Bringing him back to Birmingham with one of his Orchestras would have made a far better opening concert to the International Season at Symphony Hall than the one we actually had. Probably got a full house too.

To be Lithuanian, musically speaking, is Ciurlionis! Still hardly known in the west… Don’t underestimate the Baltics, be it in the past or present!
