Irina Shostakovich, the composer’s widow, will attend tonight’s Chicago Symphony performance of the Babi Yar Symphony at the invitation of music director Riccardo Muti.

Dmitri Shostakovich is said to have kept in his drawer a tape of Muti’s 1970 performance of the symphony.

Huh? “Muti’s 1970 performance of the symphony”? Firenze? CSO PR is in overdrive.

    • Nicola says:

No, it’s totally right: Rome RAI Orchestra, sung in Italian with Ruggero Raimondi.

      • Olassus says:

Grazie, Nicola. L’ho trovato su un CD (Memories HR 4101). Incredibile. C’è scrito: “rhythmic version by Massimo Binazzi.”

Significa che ha *due* sinfonie Shostakovich nel suo repertorio!

A pity that the RAI orchestras in Rome, Milan, and Naples were eliminated. A great impoverishment for Italy.

  • Robert Groen says:

I swear, when I first saw this I thought it read: “Muti Flies Out Shostakovich’s Window”. Would have been more interesting.

  • Luigi Nonono says:

She must have been extremely young when she married him. How many wives did he have before her? She couldn’t be Maxim’s mother.
