From the Guardian jobs page:

The English National Opera (ENO) is Britain’s only full-time repertory opera company, based at the London Coliseum, in the heart of the West End of London and a stone’s throw from Trafalgar Square.  The ENO is founded on the belief that opera of the highest quality should be accessible to everyone, with a large proportion of tickets at affordable prices.  The organisation brings its productions to the widest possible audience, whether at the London Coliseum, nationally or internationally.  The ENO aims to introduce completely new audiences to the magic of opera through stimulating and creative learning and participation programmes.

(Small correction: ENO is no longer a fulltime rep company. It plays much less than a full year.)

Following Stuart Murphy’s appointment as Chief Executive earlier this year ENO are now seeking exceptional candidates to join the organisation in the new role of COO.  This post will report to the Chief Executive and be responsible for all financial, IT and legal aspects of ENO’s operations.  Candidates will ideally bring a track record of success in an FD position, bring both strategic nous and attention to detail, be an effective manager of people and have excellent communication skills.

“The organisation brings its productions to the widest possible audience, whether at the London Coliseum, nationally or internationally.”

    “Nationally or internationally”?

This would be funny if it weren’t so pathetic, not least to those of us outside London who have not seen hide nor hair of the “English National Opera” for decades.

  • Elizabeth Owen says:

Surely WNO is a full time rep. co.?

    • Chris Clift says:

And so is (are?) Opera North, by a curious quirk of fate, the offspring of ENO. For those not long enough of tooth, Opera North started life (in October 1978) as English National Opera North (ENON)

    • Chris Clift says:

So too is (are?) Opera North, Which by a quirk of fate is the offspring of ENO. For those not long enough in tooth, Opera North began life in 1978 as English National Opera North (ENON)

    • Jane Pountney says:

Opera North tours and employs staff all year round too.

  • Chris Clift says:

Sorry, I did the exposition repeat instead of taking he second time bar.

  • Myra O'Norma says:

ENO is not a repertory company. They, like the Royal Opera and WNO operate on the stagione system.

    • Chris Clift says:

So maybe you take issue with advertisement posted by ENO in The Guardian in which they (ENO) state that ‘….ENO is Britain’s only full-time repertory opera company…..’
Pace the minor amendment at the foot of the article reflecting its more recent part-time nature.

  • PaulG says:

ENO productions can be seen internationally and are increasingly rented out to destinations from Moscow to Chicago. Without the Company of course…

    • norman lebrecht says:

Not increasingly. That all stopped when John Berry left.

      • George says:

Oh come on Norman – a bit of light googling would have told you that ENO-originated productions are still on the road worldwide. It took me 5 mins to find Jones’ Don Giovanni in Basel, McDermott’s Cosi at the Met, Alden’s Otello in Canada, Gilliams’ Cellini in Paris and a whole lot more. But since when did facts get in the way of your need to indulge in a bit of ENO-bashing??
