We read on the wires that, in tonight’s closing performance of Tristan und Isolde, the male lead will be sung by Andreas Schager, the Austrian tenor who was this summer’s Parsifal.

That’s thinking out of the box.

… another good voice planning on a short career!

  • Nik says:

Is this a last-minute change or was it always planned?
Stephen Gould is singing in Walküre tomorrow. I doubt he would have planned to sing Tristan and Siegmund on consecutive nights.

    • Meal says:

Stephen Gould had to be covered last Friday during the third act. Before the second act it was announced that he is suffering from a tracheitis. Therefore, it _might_ be a change of cast in short notice.

  • Caravaggio says:

The named tenors in this thread, and many others left unmentioned, are what I like to call utility tenors. Or fly by night tenors. Meaning, none are remotely memorable. No one will talk about them in a year, if they are lucky. Perfect for today’s neither here nor there family of nonentities. Because the epidemic. Because the drought.

  • John Borstlap says:

The photograph looks like an undertaker commercial.

  • Isolde says:

I am really happy for Andreas, an outstanding singer and very nice person. I had the chance to watch his Parsifal at Opéra Bastille this summer and he was just great!

  • too demanding, apparently says:

Really?? I was not impressed with him as Max in Der Freischütz this summer… no low range, barking out high notes… smdh
