All the latest cancellations:

Denis Matsuev, Putin’s favourite pianist, has withdrawn ‘due to health reasons’.

He was due to perform two Prokofiev concertos. The first will go to Jean-Efflam Bavouzet, making his Verbier debut. The second will be played by Daniil Trifonov, who is already in residence on the slippery slope.

Also out is the violinist Pamela Frank, a Verbier fixture. She has given up all concerts and masterclasses this summer ‘due to health reasons’. Her chamber music appearances will be taken over by Hanna Weinmeister, concertmaster of Phiharmonia Zürich, and Mihaela Martin, leader of the Michelangelo String Quartet.

Worst pianist there is. A total disrespect for the score, a complete showman. A disgrace.

    • Vaquero357 says:

First time I heard him ever was at the Chicago Symphony’s Ravinia Festival – Rachmaninov 3, I believe. I always try to be charitable with a soloist who makes a bad first impression. I wondered if he just didn’t understand the Ravinia acoustic and thought the only way he could be heard was to beat the living daylights out of the keyboard.

Since then, here’s what I’ll say about Matsuev: OK in loud, clangorous music. No ear for nuance.

If you can’t even remember the piece he played – “Rachmaninov 3, I believe” – why should we give any credence at all to your views?

A Great pianist! Also an accomplished jazzer. You can’t put down musical genius!

  • Cardoso Peres says:

    The replacements are way better!
