The number of cancellations has reached double figures, leaving the Verbier Festival programme looking more like a fantasy wish-list than a serious schedule.

Here’s the overnight notice:

The Verbier Festival is saddened to announce the indisposition of Radu Lupu for tonight’s concert. We wish him a quick recovery.

At the same time we are extremely grateful to Sir András Schiff who, upon Mr Lupu’s desire, has accepted to replace him in the 4th Concerto by Beethoven conducted by Gábor Takács-Nagy.

    Am I missing something?
Are there any suggestions that the Verbier Festival is to blame for those cancellations? Have they been careless or let their artist down?
Have they done something wrong? Any skelletons in the closet?
Are all these artist lying about the reason they cancelled?
    If so, more detail please.

If none of the above apply, it is hardly their fault, and the artists who play instead are, as far as I know, of the highest calibre. Sir András Schiff – no reason for complaint IMHO.

In which case the Verbier Festival does not deserve the kind of comment that I have quoted.

  • V says:

I’d rather hear Mr. Schiff over Mr. Lupu any day. No great loss.

    • Nigel Goldberg says:

      That’s an ignorant comment

    • Eyal Braun says:

      Both are very great pianists.
Lupu’s concerts are very rare events these days- I heard him many concerts and recitals , and in some of these concerts the level of pay was the very highest a human being could wish for.

    • Brian says:

Lupu’s a great pianist who has had some shaky performances of late, based on the reviews I’ve seen.

Schiff seems to be in good form these days, though his low-key, no-flash manner is an acquired taste in this day and age.

  • Saul Davis says:

Adam Kent is far more interesting than either of those men.

  • Rob says:

They should invite amateur pianist. It might launch a big career. Give somebody a big break
