The Masters of the Universe have selected the late conductor as today’s Google Doodle.

It would have been his 91st birthday.

Still sorely missed.

Everybody should listen to his recording of Tchaikovsky’s Romeo & Juliet, it’s one of the very best.

His Schumann 3 is still a favorite.

I gotta say….always found him kind of steady and stolidy and….well, kinda dull. Then he went to the New York Philharmonic and – magic! Something about the combo of the rowdy NY Phil and the “grumpy old rabbi” (as one of my friends called him) with the generous heart just worked.

One of the greats. Cut from a kind of cloth that’s no longer made. Hats off to Google for giving him a tribute that millions of people will see. (Though one of my co-workers that I just queried had no idea who he was.)

Not surprised no one had any idea who he was. Long gone are the days when top conductors are recognized by the public at large – like Toscanini, Stokowski, Bernstein. Bernstein’s 100th birthday is coming up next month. Hope he gets the same treatment.
Underrated for sure. We could use a nice boxed set of some his better recordings. He opened my ears to other ways of orchestrating Pictures at an Exhibition with that doozy of a recording of the Gortchkov version with the LPO in fine form.
