The Mariinsky Theatre reports with regret that the leading soloist of the opera company, Honoured Artist of Russia, People’s Artist of the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania, baritone Alexander Vasilievich Gergalov, has died after a long illness.
An Ossetian compatriot of the music director Valery Gergiev, Gergalov sang 29 leading roles including Onegin, Sharpless and Gianni Schicchi. he toured with the company across Europe and was recorded in its Philips productions.
