We have been informed of the sudden passing on Saturday of David Bousso, 34, music director of the Empire Chamber Orchestra, which he founded in 2014 to give young musicians professional experience.

A New Yorker born and bred, David played violin with Daniel Barenboim’s West-Eastern Divan Orchestra in 32 countries and was awarded a Barenboim-Said Scholarship. He was recently included in a conducting workshop by Daniele Gatti and the Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.

The cause of death is unknown, apparently unexpected.

Our sympathies to his family and many friends.

His brother, Joseph Bousso, is resident conductor (1. Kapellmeister) at the Koblenz Opera.

  • Dr. Havah Wall-Apelt, MD says:

To lose any musician and especially a conductor is a tragedy in our times.

  • Bruce says:

    How awful.

  • Zalman says:

Awful. What I want to know is, how is it so many conductors are able to start part-time orchestras in New York, of all places? Yves Abel, Jonathan Strasser (or whoever started Eos), and back when Rohan something had the American Philharmonic or something like that. They are important for freelancers, but why is it so hard to do this anywhere else?

    • Dan Perkins says:

THIS is your narcissistic response to the death of a colleague?
      Despicable, insensitive, and SAD.

    • Peter Kazaras says:

Eos Orchestra was started by Jonathan Sheffer.

    • Chaz says:

New York has lots and lots of musicians and audience members who live close to each other. It’s much easier to get together there than, say, Springfield.

    • Max Raimi says:

“back when Rohan something had the American Philharmonic or something like that…” Rohan Joseph. Haven’t thought about him in a few decades! He was a four-flushing fraud, and about as bad a conductor as you could want to see. I was in the orchestra he tried to start, until we realized he had no funding and no talent. A lot of idealistic young kids wasted a lot of time on that guy.

  • Yoon Jae Lee says:

Rest in Peace David. You will be dearly missed.

  • Joyce says:

After reading and seeing the few comments about a young man who devoted his whole life to music I am utterly and completely saddened.
There are no words to say other than “if you a musician make sure you enter the real world and not just the world of music.”
