Adrian Varela, a violinist in the Philharmonia Orchestra, is putting on a performance of Mahler’s first symphony with his One Tree Hill Sinfonia in an effort to raise funds for needy victims of the Grenfell Tower fire.

The concert is on June 17. If you can’t go, please give. Here.

So far, they have raised just £20.

Adrian says: ‘One year on from the man-made Grenfell Tower disaster, families of victims are still suffering. With cuts to the legal aid budget and court fee hikes, many of them have been left vulnerable in their search for justice. With this concert we support the efforts of Justice4Grenfell in their fight to help Grenfell Tower victims and their families.’

    Good idea.

And how about a concert to help the Rotherham rape victims – 1400 in a not-so-prosperous northern town?

    No, thought not. Silence.

Also Newcastle, Keighley, Rochdale, Peterborough, Aylesbury, Oxford, Bristol, no doubt among others. Yes, some fundraising and profile raising would be a great idea. Perhaps this blog would provide a platform from which to organise something like it. Money could be well spent trying to help victims to rebuild their lives. Also, as I say, raising the profile and making sure the tragedy isn’t forgotten. Specifically, given the musical resources of the Anglican and (to a lesser degree) Catholic Churches, these organisations could also be doing more to raise money and awareness for those abused within their own organisations too.

    • Bruce says:

Ah yes. Because doing something to help one group necessarily means not caring about at all about any other groups.

  • Hilary says:

An apposite choice when you consider the opening of the Finale.

  • Cadfael says:

The only music for this sad event is the Requiem : In Memoriam Josquin Desprez by Jean Richafort.
