The shirtless violinist hits Symphony Hall

His PR wants us to know that ‘Symphony Hall in Birmingham, UK, has invited the Shirtless Violinist to perform in a new music video’.

I guess that means no more dress code in Brum.

  • Skidegodt says:

Always great to see a man doing something he has a real talent for – just a shame he decided to play the violin at the same time …………

  • Alexander says:

what if they invited a shirtless girl ? I’m just wondering … 😉

    • Brettermeier says:

“what if they invited a shirtless girl ? I’m just wondering … ”

And disinvite this guy… Aren’t these mesh shirts banned by some law? If not, they should be.

Ah, great. Now I feel guilty for not wanting to go to the gym today.

      • Alexander says:

you can also work out at home, there are plenty of moves to do it there … just for you not to feel guilty 😉 … but wait a minute , why only violinists – what about piano people – a good idea for some women who are “small ( should be read as “short”) black dress lovers” 😉 Yuja, where are you ? 😉

    • Thomasina says:

Rather they tried a shirtless man because they read many comments about Ms.Wang or Buniatishvili on this blog…?

      • Alexander says:

when people write many comments on somebody it means they are interested in that somebody. it all works for publicity well, so Yuja shouldn’t be offended on this 😉 just my opinion of course …

  • Will Duffay says:

This is weird, isn’t it. As gimmicks go, it’s a pretty strange one. Will people really go to hear him play the violin just because he takes his shirt off and he has big muscles?

Are people really that simple and gullible?

    Oh, I see…

    • RW2013 says:

wouldn’t be the first gimmick in Symphony Hall.

      • Chris Clift says:

Tell me, as a regular there since the hall opened in 1991, a few more gimmicks

        • Max Grimm says:

Judging by RW2013’s past comments on Birmingham related subjects here on SD, the likelihood is high that he’s referring to Gražinytė-Tyla.

          • Chris Clift says:

            Mr Grimm

Perhaps we should let RW2013 provide his (or her) own response rather than speculate as to what it might be?

          • Max Grimm says:

            Right you are, Mr. Clift.
This means that we’re both right…

      • Sharon says:

I understand that it used to be very common, in order to increase attendance, for operas to bring in commercial performers, like famous pop singers and even famous television comedians, for performances

    • Brettermeier says:

“Are people really that simple and gullible?

      Oh, I see…”

      😀

  • Bow Man says:

Both looks and sounds better than Isaac Stern would under the circumstances…

    • Edmund J. Cole says:

Assuming a long career how many people do you think will be willing to pay the ticket to see him at 60? I’ll bet not as many as Stern . Better to rely on talent than sex appeal, which will be going away soon. What a stupid gimmick.

  • Richard Craig says:

perhaps he should just do the full monty

  • Razz Matazz says:

Well, there’s a blog called “Shirtless Opera”. Why should violinists be let off the hook?

    • Brettermeier says:

“Well, there’s a blog called “Shirtless Opera”. Why should violinists be let off the hook?”

Isn’t that “normal”? I’m always fascinated by random naked people in opera (on stage, that is. Off stage would be far more disturbing.) “Weber’s Freischütz? Let’s do it naked! Because!”

      I just don’t get it.

PS: What’s with the unlabeled checkbox below the mail address here?

  • Nigel Goldberg says:

    The times we live in.

  • Don Hohoho says:

Why not a naked orchestra? We’ve had everything else. Let’s fully desecrate the music, be completely degenerate, have an orgy at the end of the concert, for a real climax. Bob Guccione would love it.

  • Aria da capo says:

I stoped watching at 0:50. He can’t beat Kylo Ren.

  • John Borstlap says:

Finally something to keep your mind busy while listening to music in a concert hall! A woman-friendly idea that deserves to become the new dress code. While the men have gala dresses, naked shoulders, cleavages and spectacular hairdos to admire when they listen, we have to be content with all those black crows with grave faces sawing and blowing and banging, and the very very boring black back of the conductor. What’s in it for us???! This guy understood it and yes, let’s have more of them, and not only violin but also brass and especially I look forward to the big hammer in Mahler 6, would be great to have the player in full front of the orchestra with minimum coverage. That piece especially needs something to lighten it up!

    • Thomasina says:

Personally I think it’s beautiful that male players in tails and white bow tie line up. We don’t have the same taste…

  • Elena Barere says:

I don’t know- not that interesting to me other than he clearly works out and that’s really good to do as a violinist-
Some ppl here have intimated he doesn’t sound good- I thought he sounds good-I’m a violinist too! It’s dubbed, clearly, but whatever!

    • Chris Clift says:

When I was 15 and attending a summer music course, the leading string coach asked me what I intended to do in the music profession after leaving school. I told him I would go to college and then get a playing position in an orchestra, to which he replied (his exact words) ‘You need to be as fit as a rugby player’.
So I played rugby and participated in other sport, and never suffered from shoulder problems, back-ache, etc, even in five hour operas.
      Excellent advice.
