Sonya Yoncheva has canceled upcoming performances of Tosca with the Philadelphia Orchestra, an orchestra spokeswoman said. The Bulgarian soprano has been suffering from double otitis (an ear infection) and has been advised not to travel, said the spokeswoman.

The appearance by Yoncheva… was to have marked her Philadelphia Orchestra debut. “I finally got the Tosca that I’ve been dreaming about,” said conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin in Feb., 2016, when the season was announced.

She must be exhausted after the last hard months of keeping the lyric repertoire alive. Good for her for taking time or herself. We need her and her singing for many years to come!!

  • Sanity says:

It would be nice if they managed to get Melody Moore. Still the best Tosca in the US.

  • Marcus Clayton says:

Well, this certainly puts the Philly Orchestra in a jam.
They don’t have a lot of time to find a replacement, let alone a big name one.
Anna Netrebko could certainly step into the last two, but the first performance in Philly is May 12, when there is a Tosca at the Met with her on.
I heard the final Luisa Miller at the Met with Yoncheva at the Met last month, and she did not sound well at all. I had never heard her before, and I couldn’t tell if she was sick or if that was how she usually sounded. She missed some high notes and left some out altogether. If she really has a double ear infection, that would certainly explain the way she sounded.
She was scheduled to do an autograph signing at the Met gift shop immediately after that matinee performance of Luisa, but she cancelled it.

  • Silvano Franchetti says:

How about Kelly Kaduce? I just heard her riveting Tosca in Detroit.

  • Caravaggio says:

Yoncheva has been replaced in Philly by conservatory undergraduate Jennifer Rowley. This one a case when cancellations are no blessing.

Are you seriously ill? You should be stopped from posting such trash.

    And a career…
