Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla today extended her music director’s contract with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra for two more years until summer 2021.

This will take her past the CBSO’s centenary season and quell recent speculation of a post in North America.

Amazing news for Birmingham! She’s an inspiration.

    Whoop-di-diddley-do.

    Great news, go Mirga!

  • Chris Clift says:

Great news for Birmingham – Yay!!

  • Bruce says:

Wouldn’t necessarily put a stop to possibility of a North American post. Lots of conductors have held jobs in North America and Europe simultaneously.

But still, this means they like her and they want to keep her. So, good all around.

Given she has just signed an extension, and with a (nearly) newborn child in tow, AND her plans for serious things at all levels in and with the CBSO, I doubt she would follow the example of her (not so illustrious) predecessor and try to burn the (Atlantic) candle at both ends. I sincerely hope she won’t at any rate.

Unscrupulous agents manipulating a gifted but woefully naive artist were the issue there. Happily, MGT does’t seem naive and hopefully her agents are not unscrupulous.

Fingers crossed: the conductor-orchestra-audience relationship in Birmingham is a unique and wonderful thing, now into its 38th consecutive year.

And she will soon be signed on to Deutsche Grammophon by next week. It’s a win/win for everyone!

  • Barry Guerrero says:

The responsibility of being a music director for a major U.S. orchestra can be brutal in many ways, so it’s good she continues to hone her craft first in Birmingham.

    • Ben says:

      +1

P.S. Based on her pre-concert ‘interview’ of Pressler in Philadelphia, she’s a natural in leadership. She will have no problem dealing with the admin / fund-raising side of being an music director of any U.S. orchestra.

  • Barry Guerrero says:

Speaking of women conductors, can anybody tell me what has become of Simone Young? She seems to have just vanished. Hope I’m wrong.
