When Houston opened its opera house at the Wortham Theater Center in 1987, Plácido Domingo starred in Aida. Three decades later, Domingo returns to Wortham on September 26 for a gala evening marking the company’s return to its premises, flooded out by Hurricane Harvey.

Nice.

  • Caravaggio says:

Not only that but Domingo will be parting the Red Sea anew.

    • George says:

Why this hatred against Domingo? He’s brought more joy to the world than any of us. He can’t live without music. If he wants to go on, let him go on. He’s earned it.

      • Chilynne says:

        +1

      • Rosana Martins says:

I read Norman’s text more than once and did not find any hatred in it. He only reported that Domingo is going to be part of the reopening celebrations. Did I miss something?

      • Caravaggio says:

Many others have “earned it” too but get nowhere near the insatiable credit or opportunities that rain on Domingo. As for joy, that was during his tenor days. But no joy in his half baked baritone or his baton.

        • Vienna calling says:

The trick is not to go to his shows. It’s not so difficult. He’s the king of opera. Leave him alone and do something with your life.

        • Bylle Binder says:

I’ve written (and published) around two dozen of books, I’ve got great and wonderful friends and a family, so I think I’ve already something done with my life. Nevertheless I feel rather stressed out with Mr Domingo’s antics. He was good tenor, he gave us joy with that, but he’s a real bad baritone, sounding like … well, an old tenor who’s lust the best parts of his voice and is rather short-winded – and every time I read about him taking on a new role, I think of the young baritones who could have done that brillantly and who lose a chance because of this stubborn old man who can’t stop. Reading this “king of the opera” stuff makes me always reach for the seasick pills – or was that retching despite of seasick pills?

          • Saskia says:

It couldn’t be said better, Bylle Binder. It’s exactly what I feel about this old man who isn’t able to accept that his career is done since many, many years. He was a good tenor but he never was a baritone and he’s a bad conductor.

          • George says:

„Young baritones who loose a chance“

During the last decades Domingo has promoted and supported young singers‘ careers more than any other artist through Operalia, his Young Artist Programs and his own generosity.

          • Bylle Binder says:

Operalia “supports” young singers who’re mostly already through the first troubles of their young careers. They’re mostly already in an engagement, so they’re kind of already “etablished”. But what about the students in the end of their learning? What about helping them to become engaged? That’s one of the real difficult phases of a career – and there Operalia doesn’t help much (besides of Operalia costing a little fortune). For me Operalia is mostly another vehicle to promote Senor Domingo’s greatness – and that’s something I rather dislike. It makes me thinks of colleagues of his who do a lot for young singers without making such a fuss around themselves (why I’m now thinking of the Samling Foundation?).

        • Caravaggio says:

And when I say joy during his tenor days, I mean joy so long as he wasn’t singing in German.

  • Eli Bensky says:

If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.

    • Bylle Binder says:

And so we end in a bussi-bussi society where only nice things are said and no one does critic and no one develops and learns something new because it needs critic to grow. Thank you very much, but as an artist I distrust people who only say nice things. If you ant me to take you seriously, be honest! Tell me where I done well – as everyone else I like praize – but also tell me what you think not so well done. I’ll think about and so I’ll learn and develop.
