WDR Cologne symphony orchestra are making a live announcement on Facebook about Jukka-Pekka Saraste’s successor as music director in 2019.

The new man is the busy Romanian conductor Cristian Macelaru.

Judging by the announcement show, he has a lot of German to learn.

Comments

  • Derek says:

I have seen him in two concerts in 2016 which included Shostakovich Symphony 8 and Brahms Symphony 2 which were very well received

I enjoyed the performances and liked his technique. I would say that he is a good choice and wish him success.

  • C Porumbescu says:

An interesting, intelligent conductor, capable of real brilliance – I think he’ll be a lot better known in due course. Conducted Bartok’s “Wooden Prince” with the CBSO Youth Orchestra in Birmingham a couple of years back, which is not the sort of gig you’d expect from an unimaginative or uncommunicative maestro.

  • Rob says:

Is he as good as Weingartner ?

  • Conducting Feminist says:

They should have chosen a woman conductor.

  • Max Grimm says:

“Judging by the announcement show, he has a lot of German to learn.”

He should be alright. His two predecessors, Jukka-Pekka Saraste and Semyon Bychkov, did things auf Englisch during their time there.

  • Anthony Kershaw says:

    Better.

  • Kundry says:

Good baton technique, efficient , in the sense that he does not say much, everyone’s friend, delivering platitudes with an air of self importance, a journeyman who has been sent by his agents to just about all the orchestras on earth with an open music director position, offering no interpretative ideas and bothering nobody, will conduct anything and anywhere, in other words – perfect for these times and for a correct, boring German orchestra, finally gets a job – it seems a perfect match. He also has the good fortune of following the eminently soporific Saraste.
