Kathryn Lewek has pulled out of next month’s Washington production of Bernstein’s Candide, due to a happy event.

She is replaced as Cunegonde, the anti-hero’s love-interest, by another American soprano, Emily Pogorelc.

Kathryn made the announcement herself, as is the way these days:

Soprano Kathryn Lewek is thrilled to announce that she is expecting her first child with husband Tenor Zach Borichevsky! While she will no longer be performing Cunegonde in Candide next month with Washington National Opera, a role and production she originated with Francesca Zambello at the Glimmerglass Festival, don’t miss her performance at WNO’s star-studded Gala on May 20th where she will perform the famous aria Glitter and be Gay amongst other selections. Kathryn will also return to Washington National Opera in the 2019-2020 season along with her husband Zach Borichevsky. Stay tuned for more exciting news on her upcoming engagements!

It appears that she is planning to take off more than a year to care for the baby. In the United States, without paid parental leave, few mothers have that luxury

    • Bill says:

Quite possible this is just a mention of when she is next singing in the place where she is pulling out of the production, not that she has no other engagements planned for the next year. The text does after all refer to her return to the WNO, not her return to the concert stage.

    • Boris says:

I don’t believe that’s the case. See my other comment below.

  • Boris says:

I believe she is still performing in Aix this summer as well as Indianapolis and Spain before she takes maternity leave in mid-August- all Queen of the Night. She announced this on Twitter shortly after this first announcement.
