As predicted, the next intendant of Bavarian State Opera from 2021 will be the Belgian Serge Dorny. The next music director will be the Berlin-based Russian, Vladimir Jurowsky.

Dorny, presently at Lyon Opera, has been exposed for living high on expenses. His previous ‘Sun King’ appointment at Dresden was terminated before he could take the job. Munich must be very confident of his competence.

Jurowski, former music director at Glyndebourne and presently at the London Philharmonic, has extensive operatic experience.

They will succeed the outstanding Nikolaus Bachler, who is retiring, and Kirill Petrenko, who will head the Berlin Philharmonic.

  • John Rook says:

If this is breaking news, we need to fix it.

  • Caravaggio says:

Well, Munich was very confident of Peter Jonas’ “competence” and look how that turned out.

    • Helene Kamioner says:

As an intendant and mensch Peter Jonas is super great, tireless, devoted and moved the BStO forward to the 21st Century, particularly with David Alden’s productions and the help of the late and brilliant Dr. Ulrike Hessler among other fabulous colleagues who adored Sir Peter.

    • Tristan says:

the real greatness though was achieved by Bachler and Petrenko who made the Munich Opera the best in the world! Where else do you get the unique constellation Petrenko in the pit and the leading duo Harteros/Kaufmann on stage? Only in Munich!

      • Helene Kamioner says:

        Dear Helen,

Thank you very much for that excellent coverage of the Munich Opernfestspiele you made possible. I think the regular visits of the major critics really help. I had an especially nice lunch with Alex Ross last Saturday. I think Munich is now seen as a champion’s league player in the American media. Many thanks again!

        • Hanna Nahan says:

Way to blow your own trumpet at others’ expense, darling… Keep it classy.

          • Helene Kamioner says:

I worked very hard to make it happen and am damn proud of being associated and having been given the honor to contributing to the greatest opera house in the world. And I thank Frau Hessler, who by the way was responsible for bringing Thielemann to Dresden during the tragically brief time she was the first female intendant of the Semper Oper.

  • Anon says:

Jurowski and Dorny seem to be very different characters and have very different artistic perspectives. 2021 is still a bit away though…

  • Qwerty1234 says:

Will Jurowski leave the radio orchestra in Berlin? Or his position in London?

    • Max Grimm says:

Word on the streets is that he’s keeping his position with the RSB in Berlin and relinquishing his positions with the LPO and the State Academic Symphony Orchestra “Evgeny Svetlanov”.

    • RW2013 says:

His RSB concert on Sunday was heavily papered with an abundance of 5€ and even free tickets being sold and handed out, which attracted an annoying public of phoners, filmers and walk-arounders.
Nevertheless a smart well-played programme of Berg and Shostakovich.

      • James says:

I was at the same concert and found the audience particularily well behaved.
I hadn’t a single complaint in that regard.
The performances of Shostakovich, Dean and Berg were beyond praise.
It was a concert to remember.

    • Saxon Broken says:

Given he lives in Berlin, it seems likely he might prefer to keep the Berlin job rather than the London job.

  • EricB says:

Ah, ah, ah, “regime” is indeed the right word….
Well, GOOD LUCK to the Munich staff….

  • Edgar says:

    “Wer weiss, wie das wird….”

    • Manfred Gerber says:

I just learned that the Party at Lyon Opéra is still going on.
But they would not declare the number of bouteilles de Champagne
      were opened!

  • Franky says:

Thank you so much Gina!! have a nice day
