On Friday, a young conductor called Thomas Guggeis took over a production of Salome in Berlin after Christoph von Dohnanyi fell out with the director, Hans Neuenfels.
Today, it is announced that Thomas, 24, is the new Kapellmeister in Stuttgart.
Taking-over a Salome is a feat of the first order, being a work over which a conductor can easily loose his head.
If the head only gets a bit loose, that’s not a major impediment.
Yes very impressive (assuming he did a good job by the musicians in the pit and the singers on stage).
Congrats and look forward to hearing more from this young prodigy.
Thomas has been in my class in Milan as an Erasmus student. He was really a good one, also a wonderful pianist. Great job Thomas!
The Staatskapelle has had Salome in it’s regular repertoire for decades.
And is going from Barenboim/Berlin to Cambreling/Stuttgart really a boost?
at least, it definitely is a publicity boost; this jump-in makes for a great anecdote in his CV –
having read the first reviews, it sounds like an artistic success as well.
so congratulations are in order.
also, becoming kapellmeister is a considerable step up.
Stuttgart is a very fine company (and Cambreling no longer there. Cornelius Meister is the new GMD).
Let’s wish the kid well.
Let’s hope he doesn’t become a puppet for stage directors and intendants.
