Dale Johnson will step down as artistic director of Minnesota Opera at the end of the season after 23 years in the job and 33 with the company.
He will continue to advise President and General Director Ryan Taylor on new work and new artists.
This is a natural transition and I’m assuming a planned one. The opera, however, is not “headless” – it has a fine young CEO and former opera singer (a MN Opera resident artist) who learned the managerial ropes from the invaluable Kevin Smith, the CEO of the opera for 25 years and now the CEO of the Minnesota Orchestra which he will leave in great shape in August 2018. The Minnesota arts community is deeply in their debt.
