The tenor, who was supposed to attempted the Richard Strauss valediction, has pulled out of a performance with Antonio Pappano and the Santa Cecilia in Rome.

Kaufmann first cancelled the Songs in London last February. He has rescheduled to sing them at the Barbican in May.

  • Thea Derks says:

Lucky Romans, hope Santa Cecilia will replace the turbo tenor by a real singer.

  • Igor Kennaway says:

Maybe that he has cancelled while preparing to study the role of the Feldmarschallin

  • Robin Worth says:

If you read the Italian text you will see that Pappano and his band are compensating for the “improvvisa defezione” by giving their grateful public a free concert tonight. Not a bad deal for the Romans

  • Lydia wahlberg says:

    Surprise, surprise.

  • Ellingtonia says:

Perhaps it is time someone had the balls to give him the “Kathleen Battle” treatment!

    • Raymond says:

      Explain that please.

      • Charles Fischbein says:

If you recall Joe Volpe virtually threw Battle out the door of The Met suggesting she avoid the door hitting her in the ass on the way out.
But the Met wount bounce Kaufman who sells tickets and has virtually no cancellations there.
At least not as,bad as Netrebko when it comes to cancellations.

  • Claire says:

  • Viola Jane says:

    Wow- what mean-spirited comments! Extraordinary.

    • Una says:

Well I wish him well as a person and as a singer. But I do question the whole thing of him ever singing the Strauss Four Last Songs as I do Kathryn Jenkins singing Nessun dorma in Welsh!!! His Wesendonk was awful and so mannered. There is okenty of repertoire foe tenors to do without Strauss’s Four Last Songs. Tessitura means soprano and tenor song cycles are not always interchangeable. Then you have all the marketing and marketing and profiteering behind it all, but in the end he could have just said no for hnest and good artistic reasons!

  • Leonhard Medardus says:

Punishment will certainly come, after so many artistic arrogances!
Who does Jonas Kaufmann believe himself to be?
A shouting, raw voice of a corrupt human being, who allows himself to profanate all kinds of music….an operatic bitcoin!

  • Robin Worth says:

Just for the record, consider this:

I had booked , a few years ago, to see a leading bel canto lady sing in Zurich. She fell sick and could not be replaced. Zurich could not stage the production. Enter Kaufmann at short notice to let the house put on Boheme, with some success.

  • Charles Fischbein says:

I hear the Bitcom bubble burst this week.
    Bad omen for Kaufman
    Merry Christmas

  • Barb Camp says:

I will fly to NY to hear him sing Schubert Not my favorite
songs but they will be beautiful and I will fly home wanting
    more.
