The Romanian soprano Adela Zaharia saved Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor at the Bavarian State Opera this weekend.

Diana Damrau called in sick and Zaharia just breezed it in a cast that included Piotr Beczala, Nicolas Teste and Ludovic Tezier. Antonino Fogliani conducted. Zaharia, Domingo’s 2017 Operalia winner, is a member of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein ensemble.

Damrau will be off for the rest of the run, replaced by Olga Pudova.

Elle a été prodigieuse !!Et a reçu un triomphe.

  • MarieTherese says:

The headline in this article is misleading. I happen to know that Ms Damarau gave the opera house at least a week’s notice of her illness, so it was not “zero notice”. Just because a cast change isn’t listed immediately on an opera house’s website doesn’t mean that they don’t know of the upcoming substitution- it’s often done so that they can keep selling tickets on the basis of the original cast.

In this case it was announced as well. The theater was touting Zaharia’s Saturday appearance on its social media on Wednesday, 6 December.
