The American tenor is singing his first Turiddu tonight in Cavalleria rusticana, the first of three performances at Covent Garden three times this week.
He also sings Canio in I Pagliacci, replacing the Italian tenor Fabio Sartori who has withdrawn due to a family emergency.
He’s not really flying in is he, seeing as he’s in the other half of the double bill?
“Super-sub” Hymel strikes again. I vividly remember his stepping into the breach as Énée at the ROH production of Les Troyens five years ago, and he was superb. I really didn’t miss Jonas Kaufmann, whom he’d replaced at short notice, at all.
… why the hell people rant and rave about the Turiddu also being the Canio is beyond me. It is, or used to be, common practice.
