The music director of the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin  has sicked out of this weekend’s concert.

Luckily, the young Brazilian Eduardo Strausser was on hand to make his Berlin debut.

    What’s to comment?
    RT is in town so much this season that some of us were relieved that he skipped a concert (actually three this weekend), not for the first time.

    The main challenges were to flick back to the right page for the many repeats in the Bach Suite, and to find the correct tempo for the last movement of the Schumann concerto, which ended up being faster than the composer intended (quarter = 63 to allow more ease in the passagework), no problem for the phenomenal Isabelle Faust who OWNS it.

    Otherwise, the eternal question – where does the hair-flicking choreography end and the conducting begin?

        There are some for example, one of whom celebrating a big birthday this week, whose hair and extraneous movements have been reduced to such a minimum, that it is possible to let the music emanate from where it really matters without the intervention of the pelvic thrust, the shaking brown/grey curls or the pleading gesture to the Almighty.

    I worked with him in Switzerland. He is an energetic conductor with a real knowledge of music. He will go places
