Does this woman get her kicks from firing musicians?

Bob Keefer in Eugene, Oregon, has some new leads on the firing of Matthew Halls as artistic director of the Oregon Bach Festival, apparently on anonymous and trumped up charges.

The executive who sacked him acted in exactly the same way a year before with the OBF’s artist liaison manager, Linda Ackerman. The evidence, then as now, was flimsy or rigged.

The person behind both dismissals is Janelle McCoy, OBF Executive Director since January 2016.

She seems nice.

Read Bob’s exposé here.

It’s a chiller.

Haven’t we heard enough about this problem? Would we have heard so much of the guy was not English?

    • rg says:

No, we haven’t heard enough about this problem. Not until we understand it clearly. We’re not all the way there yet, but this story helps, a lot.

  • Doug says:

Yet another example if rampant social pathologies in the classical music “industry” particularly in the United States.

  • Bruce says:

It looks like the answer to your question is probably yes; or at least it looks like she does it as a way to deflect blame.

  • Robert Holmén says:

Great reporting by a small paper.

My favorite part is the barring of Ackerman from even attending concerts and the setting of two (2) cops on her to evict her from the concert hall long after she’d been fired.

It’s an all-too familiar syndrome in our homeland security world: someone official (or just rich) provokes someone with less power to the limits of endurance and ends by setting the plods on then, as if trying to provoke hysteria or better yet, enough resistance that they be hauled away as violent and dangerous.

The shameless and past master of this our own Donald Trump. See the Scottish documentary on his treatment of holdout landowners when he was assembling his coast-ruining golf course in the highlands, and how he used the local police there to jail the (lawful) crew trying to cover this. Tight handcuffs, brothers and sisters!

Perhaps an unfair judgement, but, to my mind, in that picture Ms McCoy gives the appearance of having attitude issues. Needless to say, I would neither deny, nor offer, nor terminate employment on the basis of a photograph, but to me it expresses a thousand words relative to the press story.

  • Amy Adams says:

Do a side-by-side comparison of Janelle McCoy’s bio on the Oregon Bach Festival website from earlier this year to its current form.
In April, 474 words including a loving reference to her current husband, Derek and their dogs.
Now, 713 words and several board feet of links to her many accomplishments.

Anyone remember when arts execs were not quite so worried about their cv, and instead concentrated on the good of the organization?

  • David says:

La McCoy seems to be a truly wonderful person, an executive director made
    for Trump’s America.

Heavy narcissistic personality disorders are terrorizing our societies. They are on the rise and spreadin as a mental plague.

  • John Porter says:

I am just not sure what this is all about. Can’t a chief administrator discharge an employee? These aren’t civil service jobs and unless there is a violation of the law, people can be fired for any number of reasons.

    • Anon says:

They can, but that doesn’t make it necessarily right.

    • Robert Holmén says:

A chief administrator is hired and expected to run an organization well, not merely to fill a place on the org chart.

To that end, their personnel decisions should be for the betterment of the organization, not to its detriment.

By the account of this article, she has fired people who were doing their jobs well, and then put the organization in legal peril by slandering them to justify doing it.

      That’s what this is about.

UO has become the laughing stock of the classical music world.

  • Christian says:

When I read the title “DOES THIS WOMAN GET HER KICKS FROM FIRING MUSICIANS?” I thought for sure the article would be about the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra’s CEO, Raina Yeong Abdullah!
