As we reported earlier, Semyon Bychkov is to be the next music director of the Czech Philharmonic, succeeding the late Jiří Bělohlávek.

Bychkov said today:’The Czech Philharmonic is among the very few orchestras that have managed to preserve a unique identity.  In a music world that is increasingly globalized and uniform, the Orchestra’s noble tradition has retained authenticity of expression and sound, making it one of the world’s artistic treasures.  When the orchestra and Czech government asked me to succeed beloved Jiří Bělohlávek, I felt deeply honoured by the trust they were ready to place in me.  There is no greater privilege for an artist than to become part of and lead an institution that shares the same values, the same commitment and the same devotion to the art of music.’

Fabulous and lucky them (both parties)

  • David Nice says:

Re the previous rather ill-intentioned entry, Tomáš Netopil and Jakub Hrůša are the principal guest conductors – as I understand it they will conduct as many concerts as Bychkov. Seems the right way to go.

  • Bogda says:

Bychkov is probably the best choice for Czech Philharmonics. There is so much chemistry between them that every concert was pure magic. As for young Czech conductors, they are still too young for this position. Both have had some successes, but also a lot of misses, and in some way are way overhyped, especially Hrusa. His concerts with Czech Philharmonics were either loud or a mess. They still need a lot to prove and do until they would come even close to the status that Bychkov has and that Czech Philharmonics requires for a Chief Conductor. Czech Philharmonics is one of the world leading orchestras and does need one of the world leading conductors at the helm.

I’m happy for Maestro Bychkov ( I secretly hoped him to be the next music director of BPO…).
