The Columbus Symphony* has released sad news of the death of Gene Standley, its principal horn since 1990.

Gene was involved in an auto accident on August 25.

The son of two French Horn players in the Pittsburgh Symphony, Gene studied at Curtis and played in the Philadelphia Orchestra in the 1980s before moving to Ohio.

He survived a bout of cancer three years ago.

Our sympathies to his grieving family and colleagues.

* An earlier version of this post mistakenly stated ‘Columbia Symphony’. We apologise for the unfortunate error. A GoFundMe appeal on behalf of the family to help with hospital expenses has now been taken down.

  • Mark Henriksen says:

    Columbus Symphony

    • Olassus says:

      Günther Herbig’s orchestra, no less.

    • Olassus says:

How awful that a musician in such a position has to beg for money to pay the hospital, and with Obamacare still the law.

      • phf655 says:

Gunther Herbig has not had a connection with this orchestra since he completed a two year tenure as Music Advisor in 2011. The current music director is Rossen Milanov, who was the Assistant Conductor of the Philadelphia Orchestra for many years before assuming this post. This orchestra, as is the case for all of the arts in this fast-growing city that is now much larger than Cleveland, has always kept a low profile.

  • Julia says:

As of yet there is no campaign.

    Sincerely,

    Julia Rose
    Associate Principal Horn
    Columbus Symphony

  • John coetse says:

RIP — Gene Standley, will join the horn chorus at the pearly gates

  • Jocelyn Standley (Gene's wife) says:

I’m hoping if any campaign is started I’ll be notified? I wouldn’t want some scammer collecting money in Gene’s name. Thank you all for the condolences.
