UPDATE: Kyeong Ham, an oboist with the Concertgebouw orchestra in Amsterdam, won second prize at the ARD finals this afternoon together with Juliana Koch, principal oboe at the Royal Danish Opera and Thomas Hutchinson of New Zealand. No first prize was awarded.

The result we reported earlier was based on erroneous information.

This is wrong. All the finalists won second price. There is no first price.
Juliana Koch won the audience price.
As can easily be checked on the ARD competition official website.

  • I’m sorry, this is Korean-biased fake news.

    • Frank says:

      I tend to agree.
As others have correctly mentioned, according to the official website:

Kyeong Ham, South Korea, 2. Prize
Thomas Hutchinson, New Zealand, 2. Prize
Juliana Koch, Germany, 2. Prize + Audience Prize

    • And I would assume that the Korean is listed in the first place simply because winners of the same prize category are sorted alphabetically.

So, here is the lesson for all aspiring participants of such kind of music competitions: Remember to change your name to something starting with A.

  • Karl-Friedrich says:

please do not forget to mention Thomas Hutchinson!

  • Wai kit leung says:

So there are still only three first-prize winners on oboe in the entire history of the ARD competition …

I am of the firm conviction that once you’re a professional, you should not participate in competitions, because it can’t do you any good:

    1) if you come in second, then it’s just embarrassing, it tells the world that you are not first prize material

    2) if you come in first, your colleagues don’t are, you don’t get a raise

Better not to compete and keep the mystique that you are too good for competitions…

    • Wai Kit Leung says:

Very good point. I am wondering, what if the principal oboe couldn’t get past the first round while the second oboe of the same orchestra ends up in the final and claims second? Must be embarrassing and uncomfortable for both parties …
