Elena Schwarz, presently assistant to Mikko Franck at the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, has signed a worldwide agency deal with Sulivan Sweetland.

    It’s Maestro, even for the ladies, and not Maestra, which means schoolmistress.

      That is factually incorrect. Maestro or Maestra both mean the same in Italian – they simply differentiate between the gender of the person referred to. Some might think that the male form of the word—Maestro—is the only form to be used when referring to a musical master (i.e. not necessarily a conductor, but a distinguished musician), and I suppose they might think that because this has historically been a male-dominated role. However, it would be incorrect to address a female as Maestro.
