You could not nor would not want to book all of Salzburg, you need to do careful research there have been some dire productions since H v K went to Vahalla, just some operas, liederabend, piano, a quartet maybe. The glitterati with their garish Maseratis do attend to be seen rather than to listen, my green 1952 XK 120 drophead Coupe always attracts interest. I never stay in Salzburg itself, I stay in a delightful villa in Anif not far from H v Ks place. I would never pay anywhere near 450 Euros.
I’m jealous, Father Ted, as I live in Australia. When I lived in Vienna, though, I always believed that what was on offer there was much better than Salzburg anyway.
Oh, go on, go on, go on, go on…Father!!
Salzburg is a real tourist trap, I prefer festivals like Melk, Innsbruck, the latter I book the lot, 3 weeks of heaven, now that Bishop Brennan has relieved me of my tirsesome duties on Craggy island I will book the Schloss Concerts in July too next year. My dear friends Roman and Nora will put me up, they are expecting a delivery next month!
I studied at the Mozarteum for a few months and, as a Londoner, sized up.that place very quickly, even as a young soprano.in those days! And I have family who have lived there from Ireland since the ’60s. I went back in July 2015 to do some concerts – a lot of keeping up appearances in that city never changed!
The level is going down everywhere, Salzburg is no exception
I agree. The first year I went to Salzburg (1978), I started with a Pavarotti recital, then the Ponnelle/Levine Zauberflöte; a VPO/Böhm concert; a Rosenkavalier conducted by Dóhnanyi with Janowitz, Minton, Popp and Moll; the Karajan Don Carlos and Salome; the Ponnelle/Böhm Giovanni; a VPO matinée with Curzon and a Karajan Verdi Requiem with Freni, Baltsa, Carrera and Ghiaurov.
That is an impressive post purely from a name-dropping perspective, and of course you wouldn’t be able to see the same lineup again since most of these legendary artists are either deceased or have ended their careers.
Does this mean that standards have dropped? Absolutely not. I thought the quality on offer this year was outstanding. No doubt 30 years from now I shall be fondly reminiscing about what I saw and heard.
No, the point is the calibre of singer today is not really the same at all. No one like Fritz Wunderlich, or Martha Modl or Hans Hotter or Irmgard Seefried, the latter’s liederabends I attended in the 1950s-60s.
