Claudia Pinza Bozzolla, the only child of the great bass Ezio Pinza to follow him into opera, died in Pittsburgh on Thursday.

Growing up in Italy after her parents’ marriage broke down, she made her Scala debut at 18 and progressed to the Met, where her father had sung for 20 years. They managed to appear together in Faust at San Francisco Opera before he moved on to a second career in stage musicals.

Claudia set up as a voice teacher in Pittsburgh, where her star pupil was Vivica Genaux.

Fine obit here.

I missed a concert at the Australian Festival Chamber Music in Townsville last night due ill health. It was the closing concert & Henk Neven was to sing Some Enchanted Evening. I watched at home on u tube many guys sing the song but the one I knew as a kid was Enzio Pinza. My Dad had the LP with Mary Martin. Hadn’t thought of this for many years & now I see your tweet re his daughter Claudia. Many thanks

“She made her Scala debut at 18 ”

This factoid from an obituary has gone world wide, and seems to me to be a misreading of a reference online, an article detailing 20th century Monteverdi performance to an appearance at Cremona’s Teatro Ponchielli as La Musica in L’ORFEO opposite Fedora Barbieri. (The *next* entry deals with the Piccola Scala). A colleague states that there is no mention of Ms. Pinza in the Scala Archives at all.

With San Francisco Opera she also sang Elvira to her father’s Giovanni, very much in the Garcia family spirit.
