The German composer has notified the Festival of European Church Music that he cannot accept its award this weekend, ‘due to a serious illness’.

Rihm, 65, is an artistic director of the Lucerne Festival. We hope he recovers in time.

  • Robert Braunmüller says:

“Rihm, 65, is artistic director of the Lucerne Festival.” Never.

Robert, you omitted the “an”. Since he has followed Boulez as director of the Lucerne Festival _Acadamy_, it is a point of view whether you can call him „_an_ artistic director of the Lucerne Festival“. However, I agree that it might be misleading to do so. He is a very fine musician. I wish him all the best.

Rihm holds an academic post at Karlsruhe, for new muzak! Clearly he can write his subsidised tuneless wrong note stuff without any financial loss courtesy of the tax payer. I once sat for over 80 mins for a Rihm concert, afterwards I went home and played this concert of Daniel Fortea guitar music in Cork, more enjoyable. Fortea was a colleague of Segovia.

Cue Borstlap’s incoherent Rihm bashing comments in 3…..2….1…..

    • John Borstlap says:

We were just in time, and have tied him up on a chair and taped his mouth, for the time being, untill the redness of the face decreases and the steam no longer comes out of the ears.

PS It appears that mr B was particularly offended by the accusation that his bashing would be incoherent, since he applies extreme care in every bash to keep it accessible and especially, coherent. We did a check with other staff members on a couple of bashes over the last months and concluded that he is right. We therefore would like to wholeheartedly recommend to read properly before claiming flaws of this kind.
