As a girl she took singing lessons with the dream of conquering La Scala.

But then something about her caught the eye of a film producer and her ambition was put on hold.

Still, she did get to film Pagliacci in 1948 opposite Tito Gobbi.

    I didn’t know about the singing, but I fancy the big glockenspiels got a bit of a workout.

    I listened to the “Vissi d’arte” — not one for the history books, but she certainly sounded good enough to sing at regional houses (and not that people were quite so preoccupied with opera singers’ looks at that time, but she certainly had the looks and temperament for the role).
