The National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America, 115 young musicians, leaves today for a tour of three Latin American countries – Colombia, Ecuador and Mexico – working with young musicians in all three nations. Marin Alsop conducts.

The NYO’s founder, Carnegie Hall chief Clive Gillinson says the orchestra will ‘serve as great musical ambassadors for their country.’

That’s the country whose president was elected on a promise to build a wall and make Mexico pay.

Extraordinary times.

A wall of music is better!

  • Petros Linardos says:

Appropriate counterpoint to a hate filled president.

  • Ruben Greenberg says:

I’m sure this is a fabulous orchestra and I’m also sure not many of its members voted for, or would have voted for that awful man.

  • PaulD says:

They’ll be visiting a country whose citizens are willing to risk dying in the back of a truck of heat exhaustion in order to move to a country led by “that awful man.”

  • Vincent Johnson says:

Those kids are in for the times of their life. The People of Mexico are going to just love them. Kudos to them.

  • Semaj says:

I’d say that tour would’ve been planned at least a year ago, probably more, when the eventual the outcome of the 2016 election wasn’t foreseen by most people and it’s not like Carnegie Hall — or any other NYC cultural institution — would be afraid of alienating the Trumps and risking the millions they (don’t) donate to said organizations.

    • Petros Linardos says:

Moreover, many people have reacted to Trump’s election by increasing their donations. I wouldn’t be surprised if Carnegie Hall or the National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America have benefited from that trend. After all, in Manhattan, where the Trump Tower stands two blocks away from Carnegie Hall, Trump received 9.7% of the vote.
