Agents in scramble for surprise Cardiff winner

Catriona Morison, winner of the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition, had failed to be spotted by the music business. She is listed only with a boutique firm – CMC – Cecilia Music Concept GmbH – in Cologne. International agents will be pursuing her first thing tomorrow. She will not want for suitors.

By contrast, her UK colleague Louise Alder is listed with AskonasHolt.

The US finalist Anthony Clark Evans is represented by CAMI.

The Australian Kang Wangis is with IMG.

The Mongolian baritone Ariunbaatar Ganbaatar is with the Wild agency.

On this result, the competition did exactly what it is meant for – it discovered new talent and put it on the world stage.

  • … had failed to be spotted by the music business.

London and New York agents. Ha ha! London is 2 years behind, New York 5 years. They do not have ears to the ground. That costs money, and they understand money. So they wait until someone else spots the talent, or a competition does. Then they twist the artists’ arms, offering more clout than the smaller agent an artist has settled with. But the Internet has empowered smaller shops, and the game is changing.

  • Perhaps she just doesn’t want an agent? She has a very nice position in Wuppertal, with a great Intendant who is taking the house in very interesting directions.

I’ve only met her once. She was nice. Full of life.

  • I’m so delighted with this result. A truly special singer has been given a wonderful chance. The orher finalists were also extremely talented but she was able to deliver a really honest heartfelt performance – no mean fear in such an important competition. And it couldn’t happen to a nivåer person. I hope she chooses her agent very carefully!!!
