Sicklist: Hamburg loses two more conductors

The spate of cancellations continues at the Elbphilharmonie.

Thomas Hengelbrock has pulled out of two performances of Rhinegold (Marek Janowski steps in) and Christoph von Dohnanyi who has been poorly for much of this year has cancelled three concerts in May.  Hannu Lintu is his sub.

  • I heard an absolutely astonishing live performance of Bruckner 5 under Hannu Lintu’s baton in Iceland in February 2016. Lintu and the Iceland Symphony Orchestra gave the performance of a lifetime, which blew away nearly a half dozen other live performances I’ve heard under the batons of Barenboim, Welser-Most, Haitink, Ozawa, etc.

I’m curious, what experiences have others on here had with Lintu live? Did I hear the greatest performance he has ever given, or is he seriously underrated?

  • Lintu was the RTÉ NSO’s principal guest conductor for some years and made a lasting impression, not just in the Finnish core repertoire but also in French, German and Austrian works. I hear many of his recordings on Rete Toscana Classica – he’s special.
