A fistful of debuts in Vienna’s Siegfried

A review in OperaWien counts off the number of singers making their role debuts in Vienna’s Siegfried revival, some of them late replacements for missing stars.

Stefan Vinke sang his first Vienna Siegfried. Wolfgang Ablinger-Sperrhacke made his debut as Mime. Tomasz Konieczny stood in for Sir Bryn Terfel as Wanderer. And this was Petra Lang’s first Siegfried-Brünnhilde in Vienna. Some of the small roles were also first-timers.

Nobody seemed to mind. The show was sold out.

  • Norman, a note on terms:

*Vinke “sang his first Vienna Siegfried” — therefore a “house role debut”; “role debut” may have been with Pappano at ROH in 2012

*Ablinger-Sperrhacke — possibly a “house debut,” i.e. had never before sung at the Wiener Staatsoper; “role debut” may have been in Munich in 2012

*Konieczny — first sang Der Wanderer at the Wiener Staatsoper in 2013, and recorded the role for PentaTone that same year; therefore no debut in his case

*Lang’s “first Siegfried-Brünnhilde in Vienna” — this implies a “house role debut,” provided she had earlier sung the role somewhere else; otherwise it is a “role debut”

Kidding? Nicolas Joel’s “Siegfried” in Toulouse 2002 !

      • Clarrieu, “may have been” leaves open the possibility of the role debut being earlier than 2012, as apparently it was.

Surprised to read that Siegfried was ever performed in that little theater, where I heard and saw an unforgettable Hippolyte et Aricie.

        • Oh, they did – apart from a whole Ring – several “Meistersinger” as well, all conducted by P.Steinberg…
