Will Netrebko sell Down Under?

Tickets have gone on sale for the soprano’s first visit to Australia.

Anna will be accompanied by husband Yusif Eyvazov and ‘renowned conducter (sic) Mikhail Tatarniko’.

Tickets are priced from $182 to$927 and the hype machine has started pumping.

But will tall-poppy Australia come rushing out for a superdiva?

A couple of years back, they failed to fill the halls for Jonas Kaufmann.

Anna will be the acid test of what sells in Oz.

  • Ungeheuer says:

Mikhail Tatarniko “renowned”? Where? In Oz? Who knew?

  • V.Lind says:

I can’t see it. $400 is a big ask in New York. Doesn’t seem likely in Sydney. Although Australia used to be a regular touring area for theatre in particular and music as well, I suspect the withdrawal from classical music is as great there as it has been elsewhere.

  • MacroV says:

Another version of “milk the provinces.” I wouldn’t pay $400 to hear anything, other than perhaps Kleiber conducting Rosenkavalier. A vanity concert with Netrebko, a pickup orchestra, and lackey conductor? Maybe if she were singing a regular show with David Robertson conducting the Sydney SO, and at somewhat more manageable prices…

  • me! says:

It says Top End tickets are 400, not ALL tickets. And she is a world class singer, literally, and so a concert of her singing cannot be called a vanity concert, by any means. It is a pleasure to hear her sing and she charged the same and sold out the Metropolitan Opera in NY for her recital here (just her and pianist). Grow up. There’s plenty to criticize in this world, this isn’t one of them.

  • Fancuila del West says:

LA Opera is charging $339 for Netrebko’s concert on May 4th and they are only half sold.

  • Robin Bermanseder says:

    Aussie here.
Already spent my culture budget for the year, will be hearing Petula Clark in Canberra next month.
But this is pretty exciting, maybe a trip to Sydney in October can be arranged.
    Love the soprano voice!

  • Alexander says:

her voice is huge and will be able to fill the Sydney Opera entirely

    • Max Grimm says:

She’ll need a huge voice if my (admittedly not too extensive) experiences with Tatarnikov are anything to go by. Of the times I’ve heard him conduct with singers, he invariably managed to whip up a wall of sound emanating from the orchestra that was able to drown out anything short of a foghorn.

      • Alexander says:

they are Russians and will be able to have some kind of consensus I guess 😉

        • Zelda Macnamara says:

MIkhail Tatarnikov conducted the Hvorostovsky concert in Barcelona in November, and everything was fine.

          • Max Grimm says:

It may have been bad luck on my part as well. When I heard him in Munich some years ago, conducting the Bayerisches Staatsorchester and in Berlin last year, conducting the Staatskapelle Berlin, he had the frequent tendency of – to use a German expression – ‘lighting a fire under the bums’ of the players in terms of volume.

  • Graeme Withers says:

Kaufmann in Melbourne was 2014 not last year, and tickets were not discounted here, though they may have been in Sydney. The disaster [apart from the venue and reports of failing abilities] that will kill Netrebko in Melbourne was last year’s Robert Alagna concert, when the only opera he sang was half a duet with Siobhan Stagg, first on the program. It was a disgrace. Despite a good review from Sydney, Carrera’s farewell in Melbourne was heavily discounted – they even changed the venue from one tennis stadium to a smaller one …
Kaufmann was the first gala since Sutherland and Caballe recitals many years ago. The hall they sang in has since been demolished in favour of building apartments.

  • vonessek says:

This will also be the acid test if Anna should keep Australia on her map in the future. Generally speaking, she should not perform in places where she’s not selling out the house, while in Europe the demand is such that many of us can’t get a ticket.

  • Analeck Kram-Hammerbauer says:

I was a big fan of Anna and would not hesitate to pay 40 bucks for her concerts. But now she is so fat! I am so disappointed that she was not able to keep her discipline and professionalism up to the standard of a super opera diva. In my opinion, opera is also a visual and performing art. I can not imagine Jonas Kaufmann will be half so successful as he is now, if he has the shape of Anna’s husband.

  • Trevor Lynes says:

    Hamer is sold out !!!!
